Full Moon Party Koh Phangan
According to locals here, the Full Moon Party Koh Phangan was originally started in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s by a small group of tourists. Stories mention that the moon looked so awe inspiring along Haad Rin Beach on full moon night that the tourists decided to celebrate its magnificence with a small party. Since then, the monthly Full Moon Party Koh Phangan has grown in popularity and attracts approximately 10,000-30,000 revellers each month (depending on season). The beach comes alive from dusk till sun rise with bars playing every genre of music, including commercial house, trance, drum & bass, and minimal tech. With many international and resident DJ’s playing here each month, there is always something for everyone’s taste in music.
Professional fire jugglers, poi and skipping enthusiasts will showcase their talents and have you captivated by their skills. The dress code for the Full Moon Party seems to be ‘the brighter, the better’, with most people opting for fluorescent shorts and t-shirts. If fluorescent clothing isn’t enough for you, then why not join everyone else and decorate any visible skin on your body with fluorescent paint! You can opt to buy your own paint from local shops and get creative, or pay one of the many street artists around Haad Rin to paint a design on you.
No Full Moon Party Koh Phangan would be complete without a bucket! Buckets of alcoholic drinks and cocktails are the party goer’s favourite choice here. Bucket stalls stretch all along the beach where you can have fun with the vendors bartering a great price – anything under 200 THB is a great deal! Don’t worry if you get hungry while partying through the night as there are food stalls in abundance, all offering local dishes and finger food, along with western style fast food. They’re cheap too so carry some small change.
Full Moon Party Advice
The Full Moon Party Koh Phangan is undoubtedly an absolutely awesome and a once in a life time experience. It is great fun, has a fantastic atmosphere and is safe, providing you are sensible, use your common sense and listen to the given advice. Read our advice below and watch the video on how to have fun, while being safe at the Full Moon Party Koh Phangan.
There are a lot of drugs around at the party, but remember that all drugs are illegal in Thailand and punishable by serving long sentences in some pretty bad prisons. Undercover police will try to sell you drugs, only to arrest you, so don’t accept drugs from anybody, even if they look Western. Don’t even think about transporting drugs yourself to the Full Moon Party either, there are check points along the roads where you will be searched for drugs. Going to prison in Thailand is not a good thing, so don’t get involved with drugs!
Always wear some kind of footwear, dancing on the beach without footwear may seem fun, but as the night goes on, broken bottles and other sharp objects litter the beach. Theft and pickpockets are a common occurrence during the Full Moon Party. Bring as little as possible. Take a copy of your passport only, not the original. Bring enough money for drinks and food, normally 3000 THB is plenty for most and your room key if you can’t leave it at your hotel. We recommend you don’t even take a mobile phone, when you arrive with friends always agree on a meeting point if you get separated, a good place is on the street next to Cactus Bar as that’s in the centre of the beach. There are taxis and medical service all in close proximity to the beach so you won’t need a phone for these either.
You’re probably going to be drinking a lot of alcohol, and even though it’s night time, it’s still hot and humid. Drink plenty of water before and during the party! It will also help your hangover the next day. Buckets of alcohol are the choice of drink here and they are very cheap, but be careful. in every bucket there is a small bottle of rum, vodka and other spirits all normally mixed with RedBull. Drink too many of these and you won’t even remember the Full moon Party or you will be so sick you won’t enjoy it. Take your time drinking the buckets and know your limits, remember there’s no rush, this party goes on till after sun rise!
At Full Moon Party Koh Phangan there are many performers putting on great shows for you with fire poi, fire staffs and the largest rope of fire (skipping rope) you’ll probably ever see anywhere . All this makes for great entertainment to watch, do not try and have a go yourself! You will get burnt, that’s guaranteed! You have been warned!
It may seem like a good idea to go for a dip or swim in the ocean, but it’s not when you’ve been drinking. Not only that. there is a risk of drowning (there can be strong waves and currents during full moon), but there are taxi boats moving to and from the beach all night. These boats are large and heavy with long-tail props spinning from the rear, so you really don’t want to get hit by one of these! Also for some reason, everyone seems to use the ocean as their personal toilet during the Full Moon Party. Your here to party and dance the night away, not go swimming, best advice, don’t go in!
